Delhi Hit by Heavy Rainfall, Disrupting Traffic and Flights
Delhi and surrounding areas experienced significant rainfall overnight, offering relief from humidity but causing widespread waterlogging and disruption. The India Meteorological department (IMD) has issued a red alert for the city, anticipating continued inclement weather.
The downpour brought traffic to a standstill in several parts of the capital, including Panchkuian Marg, mathura Road, and connaught Place. Flight operations were also impacted,with data from Flightradar indicating 135 flights delayed as of Saturday morning – 15 inbound to Indira Gandhi International Airport and 120 outbound.
Despite the delays, Delhi Airport authorities stated that flight operations were currently normal, with teams working to minimize disruption. “As per the Indian Meteorological Department’s forecast, Delhi is experiencing inclement weather conditions. Though, all flight operations at Delhi Airport are currently normal.Our on-ground teams are working diligently with all stakeholders to ensure your journey remains hassle-free,” the airport saeid in a statement posted on X (formerly twitter).
Airlines proactively issued advisories to passengers. Indigo cautioned travelers about significant traffic congestion and recommended allowing extra travel time to the airport, utilizing alternate routes where possible, and checking flight status before departing. SpiceJet also warned of potential delays to both departures and arrivals, advising passengers to monitor their flight status via their website.
The IMD forecasts continued thunderstorms with rain throughout Saturday, with expected high and low temperatures of 33°C and 25°C respectively.Key Facts Preserved:
