Deadly Rogue Wave Hits Canary Islands Amid Winter Swell

It’s wintertime in the Northern Hemisphere, and that means amplified swell activity in the Atlantic Ocean, with Europe’s surfing hotspots roaring to life.

But outside of Portugal and the other usual suspects, in what some call the Hawaii of europe, the Canary Islands off the west coast of Africa have seen no shortage of swell.In some cases, this winter season has been tragic – with multiple swell-related fatalities.

And speaking of swell, see below for a cartoonishly large wave slamming a seawall, and creating an explosive curtain of water cascading in lovely chaos.
