A fatal collision on Romania’s DN1 highway near Săcel, Sibiu County, on Monday morning left one man dead and two others injured, causing significant traffic disruptions. Authorities reported the incident occurred at approximately 9:00 AM local time, blocking traffic in both directions for over an hour.
According to the Sibiu County Police Inspectorate (IPJ Sibiu), the accident involved a passenger car and a light commercial vehicle. Preliminary investigations indicate that a 33-year-old man from Cristian, driving the car in the direction of Săliște, lost control of his vehicle, crossed into the opposite lane, and collided head-on with the van driven by a 53-year-old man from Apoldu de Sus.
The driver of the car was pronounced dead at the scene by medical personnel. The driver of the van, along with a 28-year-old passenger in the car, sustained multiple traumas and were transported to the Sibiu County Emergency Clinical Hospital for treatment. Both were conscious at the time of transport, according to Andreea Ștefan, spokesperson for the Sibiu County Emergency Situations Inspectorate (ISU Sibiu).
Emergency responders, including three SMURD crews (one with a doctor), a fire engine, and a multiple victim transport vehicle, were dispatched to the scene. Firefighters used specialized equipment to extricate the injured individuals from the wreckage.
Traffic on DN1 was fully restored at approximately 11:38 AM, according to Agerpres, after authorities cleared the scene and conducted a thorough investigation. The cause of the car losing control remains under investigation by IPJ Sibiu.
