De La Soul Honors Trugoy the Dove in Emotional Jimmy Kimmel Live! performance
De La Soul delivered a poignant performance on Jimmy Kimmel Live! last night, marking one of their first televised appearances as the passing of founding member David Jude “Trugoy” Jolicoeur earlier this year. The group played two tracks from their newly released album, Cabin in the Sky, captivating the audience with a blend of energetic performance and heartfelt tribute.
The performance arrives as De La Soul re-emerges with their first album in nine years, a project deeply shaped by grief and resilience. Cabin in the Sky, released last week, is the group’s first full-length offering since trugoy’s death in February 2023. The album represents a powerful continuation of De La Soul’s legacy, navigating themes of loss and joy as they honor their late bandmate and forge ahead.
Posdnuos led the crowd in a chant before launching into “Run It Back!!,” with Maseo at the production controls. The set continued with “The Package,” enhanced by a vibrant horn section, and notably featured a dedicated moment to showcase Trugoy’s verse on the side screen, allowing his voice to resonate within the performance.
“Cabin in the Sky lives in that space between loss and light,” Posdnuos shared in a press release.”It’s about the pain we carry and the joy that somehow still finds us. This album is therapy and celebration at the same time.”
Cabin in the Sky follows 2016’s And the Anonymous Nobody… and marks a critically important chapter for the influential hip-hop trio as they navigate a new era while preserving the spirit of their beloved colleague.
