Berlin will commemorate the 1848 barricade fighting and honor those buried in the Cemetery of the March Fallen on Monday, continuing a yearly tradition. The event, held at the Friedhof der Märzgefallenen on Ernst-Zinna-Weg, will include a reopening of the special exhibition “Forgotten Remembrance,” which runs from March 18 to May 25, 2026.

The commemoration will feature welcomes from Sigrid Klebba, Chairwoman of the Paul Singer Association, and greetings from Cornelia Seibeld, President of the Berlin House of Representatives, Nancy Faeser, Member of the Bundestag, Oliver Friederici, State Secretary for Social Cohesion, and Lena Guyomarc’h, First Secretary of the French Embassy in Berlin. Philmon Ghirmai, Chairman of the Berlin Green Party, will also deliver greetings.

Dr. Susanne Kitschun, Director of Forum 1848 at the Cemetery of the March Dead, will moderate the event, which will include participation from students of the Georg Herwegh Gymnasium. Musical accompaniment will be provided by the intercultural ensemble “Iran Ava,” followed by communal singing.

The commemoration takes place as Germany continues to grapple with its historical relationship to fascism, prompting reflections on contemporary struggles against white supremacy, according to recent commentary. The event at the Cemetery of the March Fallen is positioned as a cornerstone of democratic remembrance in Berlin.

Following the formal program, guests will be invited to a reception featuring soup. The exhibition “Forgotten Remembrance” aims to revisit and re-examine the narratives surrounding the March Revolution of 1848.
