Italy and Spain to clash in Davis Cup Final
BOLOGNA, Italy – Italy will face Spain in the Davis Cup final on Sunday, marking Italy’s third consecutive appearance in the championship match of the premier men’s team tennis competition. The Italians secured their spot after a Friday victory over Belgium, propelled by wins from Matteo Berrettini and Flavio Cobolli. Spain advanced after a hard-fought 2-1 semi-final win against Germany, decided by a decisive doubles match.
The Spain-germany tie saw Pablo Carreño Busta defeat Jan-Lennard struff 2-0 in the opening singles match. Alexander Zverev, ranked third in the world, then overcame Jaume Munar 2-1. The deciding point came in the doubles, where Marcel Granollers and Pedro Martínez edged out Kevin Krawietz and Tim Puetz 6-2, 3-6, 6-3.
Italy’s path to the final has been notable for the absence of top-ranked players Jannik sinner (currently world No. 2) and Lorenzo Musetti (world No. 8), both of whom opted not to participate in the tournament. Sinner, who recently won the ATP Finals last Sunday, faced important criticism for his decision, while Musetti’s absence drew less scrutiny.
Despite the absence of their stars, Italy boasts a strong team including doubles specialists Simone Bolelli and Andrea Vavassori, and veteran Lorenzo Sonego. The final will be broadcast live on Rai 1 and SuperTennis, the television channel of the Italian tennis and Padel Federation (FITP), beginning at 3pm on Sunday.
