FA Charges David Coote Over Klopp Comments
The Football Association has formally charged ex-Premier League referee David Coote for remarks made concerning former Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp. The investigation stemmed from a video that surfaced, leading to the ex-official facing a rule breach related to his comments.
Details of the Charges
Coote was dismissed last December from his role with Professional Game Match Officials Ltd (PGMOL). This followed a video showing his derogatory remarks about Klopp, which allegedly took place in July 2020. In the footage, Coote used offensive language, including a slur about Klopp’s nationality.
The FA’s statement indicated the charge against Coote is for acting improperly and/or using abusive and/or insulting language. This breach is considered an “Aggravated Breach” according to FA Rule 3.2, given its reference to nationality. The FA clarified that no charges relate to allegations of gambling misconduct, which were thoroughly examined.
Additional Context
In January, Coote spoke publicly about his personal life, revealing he is gay. He expressed that hiding his sexuality, among other factors, influenced his behavior, which led to his comments about Klopp and drug use. Coote was also banned by UEFA until June 30, 2026, following a separate video incident.
Coote had previously denied allegations that he discussed giving a yellow card ahead of a Leeds match in 2019.
“This has been one of the most difficult periods of my life. I take full responsibility for my actions, which fell way below what was expected of me.”
—David Coote, Former Referee

In his January statement to Sky News, Coote said he felt regret for his actions, which he attributed to low points in his life. He emphasized his focus on mental health and expressed hope that his experiences could benefit football in the future.
