David Attenborough Returns for Blue Planet III on BBC One
David Attenborough returns to television screens tonight at 8:00 PM on BBC One with the premiere of Blue Planet III. Filmed across four years across five oceans, the series examines novel marine behaviors and resilience in a changing world.
Advanced Camera Technology Captures Never-Before-Seen Marine Behaviors
The BBC Natural History Unit utilized specialized equipment to record marine life activity that has rarely been captured on camera. The production team deployed mini-dome cameras to follow octopuses, leg-mounted scooters for rapid movement through water, splash drones, and deep-sea selfie sticks. A custom device called the “stonefish” camera recorded dolphins utilizing sea sponges to block coral holes and trap hiding fish. Series commissioner Jack Bootle stated at a press screening that no generative artificial intelligence was used in the production, noting that every frame consists of real photography.
Southampton Scientists Advise on Polar and Deep-Sea Episodes
Scientists from the University of Southampton provided advisory support for episodes exploring the Polar Seas, The Deep, and Future Seas. Professor Jon Copley advised on The Deep episode, including deep-sea biodiversity and undersea volcanic vents, while Dr. Ryan Reisinger contributed expertise on large marine animals and Antarctic krill surveys. Professor Clive Trueman offered guidance on fish physiology and climate change impacts on tuna populations. Professor Copley noted that the project will build upon the foundation of previous series to highlight the challenges and choices facing policymakers regarding ocean futures.
