Ecuador‘s President Noboa Targeted in Attack During Indigenous-Led National Strike
El Tambo, Cañar Province, Ecuador – October 7, 2025 - Ecuadorian President Daniel Noboa’s convoy was attacked today while en route to an event in the El Tambo canton of Cañar province, amidst a nationwide strike organized by indigenous groups. Approximately 500 individuals reportedly launched stones and fired upon vehicles accompanying the president.
According to Energy and Mines Minister Inés Manzano, President Noboa was unharmed, though vehicles in the convoy sustained damage to their bodies and glass. “There are signs in the president’s car, but he left unharmed,” Manzano stated during a press conference.
A 16-second video released by the Presidency of Ecuador depicts the moment of the attack. Following the incident, President Noboa affirmed his commitment to reaching all parts of the country, stating via social media, “We do what corresponds to us and cannot stop us: reach every corner of the country, where families need works, services and the presence of their president.”
The attack occurred as Ecuador is grappling with a national unemployment action led by indigenous peoples protesting the Noboa government. The protests have resulted in road blockades and mobilizations across multiple provinces, prompting President Noboa to declare a state of exception in 10 of ecuador’s 24 provinces.
The Presidency has characterized the protesters as destabilizing forces and announced that those arrested for terrorism or attempted murder will be prosecuted accordingly.
The event was to announce the construction of a water treatment plant in Cañar province, valued at USD 4.5 million, intended to benefit 26,000 residents, and deliver the Sigsihuayco sewerage system.
