Dangote Refinery Exports Fuel to Africa Amid Middle East Conflict & Rising Oil Prices
Nigeria’s Dangote refinery has begun exporting 456,000 tonnes of fuel to five African nations – Côte d’Ivoire, Cameroon, Tanzania, Ghana, and Togo – as global oil prices rise amid conflict in the Middle East.
The exports, consisting of 12 cargoes, commenced as the three-week-aged war disrupted crude oil shipments through the Strait of Hormuz, prompting nations to seek alternative supplies and prepare for increased energy costs. The Dangote Refinery confirmed the shipments late Sunday, stating its 650,000-barrels-per-day facility has the capacity to surpass Nigeria’s domestic fuel needs.
“By supplying neighbouring and other economies, the Dangote Refinery is expected to contribute significantly to energy security across West, East and Central Africa,” the company stated.
A refinery spokesperson, speaking to AFP, indicated the increased export demand is a direct consequence of the Middle East conflict, with requests as well received from outside the continent, particularly for jet fuel. The spokesperson declined to elaborate further on the specifics of these requests.
The increased global demand is already impacting consumers in Nigeria. Petrol prices in parts of Lagos have risen to over ₦1,300 per litre, a significant increase from ₦830, reflecting the disruptions to global supply chains. Dangote had previously assured the domestic market would remain a priority to mitigate potential shortages and price increases stemming from the international crisis.
Prior to the refinery’s launch in 2024, Nigeria, despite being Africa’s largest oil producer, was almost entirely reliant on imported fuel, frequently experiencing supply shortages and scarcity. The refinery’s operation marks a significant shift in the nation’s energy landscape.
