Dalai Lama Turns 90, Affirms Successor Despite China’s Claims
Thousands gathered in Dharamshala, India, on Sunday to celebrate the 90th birthday of the **Dalai Lama**, marking a pivotal moment amidst ongoing tensions with China over Tibetan autonomy and religious succession.
Jubilant Celebrations in India
Despite monsoon rains, crowds flocked to the Tsuklakhang Tibetan Buddhist complex seeking a glimpse of the **Dalai Lama**. The celebration included masked dancers and traditional music, with Indian government ministers and actor **Richard Gere** in attendance.
Supporters like **Namgyal Dorjee Gongpa**, who traveled from New Jersey with his family, emphasized the importance of connecting his children to their Tibetan roots. For Tibetan families in exile, these events serve as crucial links to their cultural identity.
Succession Dispute Looms
A central theme of this year’s celebration is the question of succession. The **Dalai Lama** has asserted his office’s “sole authority”
to recognize his future reincarnation, setting the stage for conflict with China’s Communist Party.
On X, the **Dalai Lama** highlighted the importance of “achieving peace of mind through cultivating a good heart and by being compassionate.”
He pledged to promote human values, religious harmony, ancient Indian wisdom, and Tibetan culture.
My heartfelt gratitude to all who have sent their good wishes on my birthday. You have shown me the value of compassion, love and kindness. In return, I will continue to pray for the well-being of all sentient beings. https://t.co/wH6G29h8QD

**Tenzin Nyidon**, from Odisha, expressed concerns over China’s attempts to politicize the reincarnation process, fearing the appointment of a **Dalai Lama** by Beijing would undermine Tibetan identity.
The Chinese government insists that the reincarnation of the **Dalai Lama** must comply with Chinese laws. A spokesperson reiterated that Beijing believes they alone hold the authority to approve the next **Dalai Lama** after a search and identification within China.
Global Support and Shifting Influence
Despite China’s efforts to discredit him, the **Dalai Lama** received birthday messages from world leaders, including former U.S. Presidents.
Narendra Modi, the Indian Prime Minister, stated on X: “I join 1.4 billion Indians in extending our warmest wishes to His Holiness the Dalai Lama on his 90th birthday… He has been an enduring symbol of love, compassion, patience and moral discipline.”
However, as China’s influence grows, the **Dalai Lama’s** global reach has seemingly diminished. He has not met with a sitting U.S. president since **Barack Obama** in 2016.

Looking Ahead
The Pew Research Center notes that 43% of Americans have a favorable view of China, while 36% hold an unfavorable view, reflecting a complex relationship amid these succession debates (Pew Research Center, 2024). As the **Dalai Lama** approaches the future, the struggle over his succession highlights the ongoing tensions between Tibetan Buddhist leaders and China, underscoring the importance of resilience and hope for the Tibetan community.
