Czech Women's Footballers Miss Out on World Cup After Defeat to Scotland

Czech Women’s Footballers Miss Out on World Cup After Defeat to Scotland

October 13, 2026 Alex Carter - Sports Editor Sport

The Czech women’s national football team missed out on qualification for the World Cup after losing 3-2 to Scotland in the second leg of their playoff semifinal in Glasgow on October 13, 2026, dropping the aggregate score to 5-2 in favor of the hosts. Entering the match facing a two-goal deficit from a 2-0 home loss in Pardubicích, the Czech side twice took the lead in the away leg before defensive errors allowed Scotland to overturn the result and advance to face Sweden. The return leg kicked off at 20:15 in Paisley.

Early Goals and First-Half Trading in Glasgow

Hopes for a comeback surfaced early at the stadium in Paisley. Veselá seized a loose ball far outside the penalty area and launched a strike from 35 meters into the top corner to surprise the Scottish goalkeeper. That early momentum stalled just two minutes later. Davidsonová drove into the penalty area and beat Czech goalkeeper Votíková with a low shot off the goalpost to equalize for Scotland. The Czech team regained the lead in the 30th minute when captain Cahynová headed in a corner kick. Ahead of the fixture, midfielder Franny Černá emphasized the psychological weight of the two-goal deficit, stating that chasing the game required total commitment from the squad. She noted that playing under the pressure of a two-goal deficit was sometimes better than holding a draw or a lead from the first leg, which might cause the team to assume victory was already secured, adding that the team knew they had to do everything possible to pull off the comeback.

Defensive Mistakes Cost the Lead

The advantage dissolved shortly after the interval. In the 49th minute, defender Bendová miscued a clearance, allowing McGovernová to score from a tight angle into a half-empty net. The decisive blow arrived in the 72nd minute. Votíková failed to secure a cross from the flank, dropping the ball directly into the path of Grimshawová, who converted the chance to seal the 3-2 scoreline on the day. Head coach Jitka Klimková told České televizi that her players had executed the game plan well in the opening phases but ultimately undermined their chances with two glaring defensive mistakes in the second half. She remarked that it was hard to evaluate, noting that they had started the match well, scored an early goal, but were frustrated to concede immediately, adding that they must learn from that lesson. She further observed that after taking a 2-1 lead, they had the match set up well and looked capable of winning and advancing, only for two massive errors in the second half to cost them the victory.

Contract Expirations and Missing Out on Brazil

With the 3-2 defeat, Scotland advanced to the final play-off round for next year’s World Cup in Brazil, leaving the Czech team to extend its wait for a maiden appearance at a major tournament. Klimková, whose contract with the association expires at the end of the year, stated to České televizi that she would like to remain with the squad and continue working with the players. She emphasized that the team must learn from the 90-minute lapses and address structural errors through training, stating that they must endure for the full 90 minutes and break through only via hard work and training. Meanwhile, the Scottish side prepared for its upcoming matchup against Sweden, while the Czech squad exited the qualification pathway in the playoff semifinals. Ahead of the match, the Czech technical staff had also analyzed the threat posed by Caroline Weir, whom Klimková described as a top player demonstrating her quality and proving she can assert herself against any opponent.
