Prague – Josef Čapek’s painting Bride sold for a record 30.6 million Czech crowns, including the auction surcharge, at a recent auction, equaling the artist’s previous record set in 2022. simultaneously, a work by Emila Filla achieved the same price, marking a shared high for both artists.
The surge in prices for Čapek and Filla reflects their growing popularity among collectors and investors, with values steadily increasing. Five Čapek works were featured in the auction, including Daisies in a Vase, which sold for 3.12 million crowns. This sale positions bride as a critically importent piece within Čapek’s oeuvre, notable for being a double-sided painting with a Cubist work, Two Children, on its reverse.
This year’s most expensive work sold at a domestic auction remains Bohumil Kubišta‘s Still Life, which fetched 44.2 million crowns in Prague in November. The overall record for a painting sold in the Czech Republic is still held by František Kupka’s Conception/Danae, which sold for 126.5 million crowns last April.
