Wildfire Rages Near Mutayaka, Cyprus; ‘Icarus 2′ Plan Activated
LIMASSOL, CYPRUS – A large, uncontrolled wildfire is burning northeast of the community of Mutayaka in Limassol, prompting the activation of the Icarus 2 emergency response plan. Firefighters are battling the blaze with support from multiple agencies and reinforcements from across the island.
The escalating situation underscores the increasing threat of wildfires in Cyprus, particularly during the dry summer months. The fire poses a risk to nearby communities and natural habitats,and authorities are urging the public to stay away from the affected area to facilitate firefighting efforts. The activation of icarus 2 signifies the severity of the situation, mobilizing a coordinated response involving ground crews, aerial support, and administrative resources.
Ground forces have been bolstered by teams from Larnaca, Nicosia, and Pyrgos, alongside personnel from the Vasilikos Station. Support is also being provided by the Department of Forests, the Hunting Service, the Civil Defense, Kitas Weather, and SupportCy volunteer groups, utilizing both crawler and othre specialized vehicles.
Deputy Mayor Christos Papamichael appealed to citizens via social media, stating, “Please avoid going to the point of fire without any substantive reason (e.g., for photography or follow-up). The presence of people in the area seriously hinders the work of the air and ground extinguishing forces and increases the risk for everyone. 🙏 Supporting the efforts with duty, avoiding any unneeded movement.”
