Cyclone Narelle: Category 5 Storm Threatens Northern Australia

March 19, 2026 Emma Walker – News Editor News

Far North Queensland is bracing for the impact of Tropical Cyclone Narelle, now a category five system with wind gusts reaching 285km/h, as it tracks towards the coast. The Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) upgraded the storm on Thursday morning, prompting widespread evacuations and warnings for residents between Lockhart River and Cape Melville.

Queensland Premier David Crisafulli described the approaching cyclone as potentially the largest “in living memory,” urging residents to take immediate precautions. “This has the potential to be a very dangerous weather event,” he said. Evacuations are underway for approximately 500 people from the remote Gulf of Carpentaria community of Numbulwar in the Northern Territory, with preparations for further evacuations as the storm’s path becomes clearer.

Narelle is currently travelling at 26km/h and is expected to produce landfall near Coen, north of Cairns, on Friday morning. The system is predicted to generate extremely destructive winds and intense rainfall, posing a significant threat to communities along the coast.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese affirmed the Commonwealth’s readiness to provide assistance to both Queensland and the Northern Territory. “The Commonwealth stands ready to provide whatever assistance is required,” he stated on Thursday. Resources, including 49 police officers, 74 fire and rescue crews, and 20 paramedics, have already been deployed to remote northern communities, according to earlier reports. Some residents requiring medical attention, such as dialysis patients and pregnant women, have been relocated ahead of the cyclone’s arrival.

Following its passage over Cape York, Narelle is forecast to move across the Northern Territory’s Top End and then into the Kimberley coast of Western Australia. Authorities are monitoring the storm’s trajectory closely, anticipating further impacts across multiple regions.

This cyclone is the first category five system to threaten Queensland since Cyclone Marcia devastated central Queensland in 2015. The current system is expected to be the strongest to cross this part of the Far North Queensland coast in a century, according to recent assessments.
