A scene featuring a “trilei” demonstration by influencer Bella (Ghislaine van IJperen) has become a focal point of discussion surrounding the upcoming Dutch romantic comedy, Verliefd op Curaçao, according to director Johan Nijenhuis.
Nijenhuis recently told the ANP news agency that he initially questioned whether the comedic element would resonate with audiences. “We wondered for a long time if that joke would perform,” he said. “But it has now become the scene that everyone is talking about.”
The film centers on Lars, who invites his single mother, Merel (Isa Hoes), on a vacation to Curaçao, secretly arranging it as a singles’ retreat. Lars is preparing to marry Bella, but is concerned about his mother’s solitude. The plot involves several characters navigating romantic entanglements on the island, including artist Ozzie (Tarikh Janssen) and romantic hopeful Herbert (Kasper van Kooten), as well as journalist Malti (Joy Delima) who is investigating the singles’ trip.
Verliefd op Curaçao has received a “12” rating from the Kijkwijzer film rating system, accompanied by content warnings for depictions of sex, coarse language, and substance use. The film stars Jurriaan Bruinier, Brian Dekkers, Mees Durge, and Jasmine Sendar, among others.
A song titled “Thema Lars & Merel” by Clifford Goilo features on the film’s original motion picture soundtrack.
The film is directed by Johan Nijenhuis and written by Annelouise van Naerssen. It currently has an IMDb rating of 6.1/10 based on 68 user ratings.
