Cuba’s COVID-19 Control: Decreasing Infections and Vaccination Progress

by Dr. Michael Lee – Health Editor

Cuba Sees Declining⁣ COVID-19⁣ Cases, Driven by Vaccination⁢ &⁢ Control Measures

Cuba⁤ is experiencing a positive ‍trend in⁣ its fight against COVID-19, with ‍recent⁤ data⁤ indicating a decrease in infections nationwide. Minister of Public Health José Angel Portal Miranda reported 74,569 confirmed cases over ⁢the past 15 days,‌ representing a decline in the ⁢infection rate. All provinces‍ have shown a decrease in incidence rates⁤ over the⁣ last two weeks.

Currently, the provinces of Pinar⁤ del Río‍ (3,014.3), Sancti Spíritus ⁣(1,851.3), las‍ Tunas‌ (1,212.1), and Camagüey (1,194.1) are ⁣facing the most challenging epidemiological situations. However, active cases⁣ across the country have fallen from over 28,000 ten days ago ‍to 18,077‌ today – a 37% reduction. Notably, over 97% of those infected in Cuba have recovered.

Several provinces and the Isle of Youth ‌are reporting‍ fewer ⁣than 100⁢ cases daily, with Matanzas demonstrating significant improvement. Governor⁣ Mario Sabines Lorenzo reported just 177 active ‌cases in Matanzas, a dramatic decrease from previous ‌four-digit numbers. The province is now averaging 33 cases per day, down‌ from 54 the ⁤previous week, and has fully vaccinated 79%‍ of its population.

The temporary working group also addressed the availability of medicinal oxygen,‌ noting increased delivery plans thanks to stable production at the OXICUBA SA plant. Provincial governments were urged to continue implementing measures for the control ⁣and rational use of oxygen.

Cuba’s success is attributed to a ⁣national effort combined with a robust vaccination campaign. As ⁢of October 7th, 71.4% of the population eligible for vaccination had received thier second dose, and 61.4% ⁣had completed⁤ their full vaccination schedule.⁤ Continued vaccination progress is seen⁤ as‍ key ⁤to reversing the ‌current epidemiological⁤ scenario and further controlling the spread of ⁢COVID-19.
