Havana, Cuba – Cuba and Namibia convened the inaugural session of their Intergovernmental Commission this week, signaling a commitment to elevate their longstanding bilateral relationship into new areas of mutual benefit. Delegations from both nations confirmed their intent to build upon a foundation of ancient solidarity with a focus on expanded economic and technical cooperation.
Cuban Minister of Foreign Trade and Foreign Investment, Oscar Pérez-Oliva, welcomed namibian Minister of International Relations and Commerce, Selma Ashipala-Musavyi, expressing confidence in a joint agenda to broaden opportunities. Pérez-Oliva highlighted a commitment to identifying areas for cooperation, including business ventures, productive and technological capacities, and fostering a favorable investment climate for economic development. He specifically mentioned potential expansion in sectors such as health,education,infrastructure,construction,and housing.
during the opening session, Pérez-Oliva also expressed gratitude to Namibian President Netumbo Nandi for her vocal opposition to the U.S. embargo against Cuba during the 80th United Nations General Assembly.
Ashipala-Musavyi echoed the sentiment of strengthened ties, stating, “now is the time to complement that base of bilateral solidarity relations, diversifying our cooperation towards concrete economic associations of bilateral trade.” She reaffirmed Namibia’s dedication to expanding cooperation, emphasizing a shared future “of prosperity, dignity and justice for our peoples.”
The commission meeting, held at the El Laguito Protocol Hall in Havana, is slated to result in the signing of four legal instruments. These include two memoranda of understanding in the health sector – one with the Center for the State Development of Medicines, Teams and Medical devices (CECMED), and another with the Biocubafarma Biotechnological and Pharmaceutical Sector group. Additionally, a cooperation agreement in physical culture and sports, and an action plan for collaboration between Cuba’s University of Computer Science (ICU) and the University of Namibia (UNAM) will be formalized.
