CU Denver First US Public University to Establish Hyderabad Campus for 2027
The University of Colorado Denver has become the first American public university to receive a letter of intent from India’s University Grants Commission to establish a degree-granting location in Hyderabad, setting an August 2027 start date for its first student cohort.
Letter of Intent Authorization and Hyderabad Campus Timeline
The authorization marks the first time an American public institution has secured approval to set up a degree-granting campus under these regulatory terms in India, and it stands as the first foreign university location overall in the State of Telangana. The institution will launch operations to welcome incoming students in August 2027. Additional academic programs are slated for formal proposal to the University Grants Commission in the second year of operation and beyond.
Planning for the Hyderabad expansion reflects the framework of India’s National Education Policy 2020. The policy prioritizes multidisciplinary learning, internationalization, measurable learner outcomes, and career readiness. Global education company Emeritus is serving as the strategic joint venture partner for the university in India, managing non-academic functions to support the establishment and growth of the new site.
Hyderabad Programs Target High-Demand Employment Sectors
Initial program offerings at the Hyderabad location will target high-demand employment sectors. These fields include business, computing, engineering, and analytics. The academic model is designed to blend fundamental subject knowledge with experiential, hands-on learning structures. Students will maintain an active connection to the CU Denver home-campus experience in the United States while pursuing their studies abroad.
“Expanding access to high-quality education has long been central to CU Denver’s vision and goals,” said Kenneth T. Christensen, PhD, chancellor at CU Denver, noting that the initiative builds on decades of engagement with students from India.
CU Denver Prepares for 2027 Launch
Established in 1973 and governed by the University of Colorado Board of Regents, CU Denver maintains an enrollment of approximately 14,000 students. The institution is classified as an R1 research institution by the Carnegie Commission on Higher Education, denoting very high research activity across its seven schools and colleges. Its global alumni network currently exceeds 100,000 graduates spread across more than 100 countries.
University administrators will continue to follow regulatory procedures with academic and industry stakeholders as development proceeds toward the 2027 launch.
