Investigation Launched After Voula Collision Injures Children

Forty-seven individuals, including ten children, sustained injuries Friday morning following a bus collision in Voula, a coastal suburb near Athens. Authorities are investigating the cause of the crash, which occurred when one bus struck another from behind.

According to reports, one of the buses was stopped when it was hit. The crash took place near the Voula beach, a popular destination for locals and tourists. Emergency services transported all the injured to area hospitals.

According to the semi-official Greek news agency, Ana, the number of wounded amounts to 47 including ten children (archive).

Giorgos Mathiopoulos, president of the hospital emergency workers’ union (EKAV), stated that “More than 15 ambulances so far have taken care of around 40 adults and six children who have all been hospitalized.”

Road traffic management, OASA, confirmed an investigation into the incident is underway. Initial images from Greek media suggest the second bus collided with the rear of the first at a bus stop.

Rising Road Incidents

The incident raises concerns about road safety, particularly during peak tourist seasons. According to the Hellenic Statistical Authority, road accidents in Greece have increased by 7% in the last year (Hellenic Statistical Authority).

The accident occurred around 11:30 am local time (08:30 GMT) on the avenue along Athens’s seaside coast. The Voula beach area is especially busy during the summer, with temperatures reaching 35°C (95°F), which is typical for this time of year.
