San Diego County Sees Rising COVID-19 Cases, Prompting Health Officials to Urge Vaccination and Precautions
San Diego County is experiencing an uptick in COVID-19 infections, with cases increasing almost weekly since early summer. The rise comes as communities resume public events and gatherings, potentially complicating efforts to maintain public health. Recent data from the San Diego County Health and Human Services Agency (HHSA) shows 537 positive COVID-19 cases reported the week of August 7, climbing to 648 cases the following week.the increase in cases is prompting county health officials to reinforce the importance of vaccination and preventative measures. While the current surge is described as a “small outbreak” similar to those occurring elsewhere, the trend raises concerns about potential strain on healthcare resources and vulnerability among certain populations. The HHSA continues to monitor infections, hospitalizations, and deaths related to COVID-19.
“The COVID-19 vaccine has been and continues to be an important part of preventing severe disease and deaths,” stated a communications officer from the San Diego County HHSA in a written statement to NBC 7. The county is adhering to COVID-19 vaccine recommendations set by the California Department of Public Health and encourages individuals to consult with their healthcare providers regarding vaccination.
Residents can locate vaccine appointments through their doctor, local pharmacies, or by visiting myturn.ca.gov. County health officials are also closely monitoring updates to vaccine recommendations through the West Coast Health Alliance.
The HHSA emphasizes that established preventative measures remain effective in mitigating the spread of COVID-19,including covering coughs and sneezes, frequent handwashing, wearing masks, and isolating when experiencing respiratory illness symptoms.More details on COVID-19 prevention can be found on the San Diego County HHSA website.
