Nintendo’s New Virtual Boy Accessory Sparks Hope for Zelda VR on Switch 2
September 26, 2025 – Nintendo has announced official Virtual Boy accessories for both the Nintendo Switch and the upcoming Switch 2, leading to speculation about the possibility of virtual reality experiences for popular titles like The Legend of Zelda. The accessories, available to Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack subscribers, allow players to slot their consoles into a Virtual Boy-style headset to play classic 3D games such as Mario’s Tennis.
The new cardboard model, alongside the previously released Labo VR Kit, utilizes lenses similar to the original Virtual Boy. While the Switch 2’s slightly different screen size could present challenges, Nintendo previously addressed screen size discrepancies with the Switch OLED by adjusting the pixel-scale size of rendered images in Labo VR experiences like breath of the Wild.
This existing capability, combined with the Switch 2’s considerably more powerful GPU and 1080p display, suggests a software update could enable Zelda and othre titles – including Super Smash Bros. Ultimate and Super Mario Odyssey – to run in VR with improved resolution and performance.
The author expressed a desire for nintendo to release a full-color Zelda VR experience on Switch 2 accessible via cartridge purchase, without requiring a subscription.Nintendo has demonstrated a long-standing, albeit unconventional, commitment to the VR space for over 30 years.
