Cornell University Sexual Assault Allegations Emerge

A sexual assault involving an intoxicated female student at a Cornell University fraternity house in October 2024 has sparked attention, with legal and institutional scrutiny intensifying over the handling of the case. The incident, which occurred at the Chi Phi fraternity house in Ithaca, New York, involved multiple individuals administering drugs and alcohol to a student who was no longer capable of giving consent.

Cornell Suspends Students After Party Sexual Assaults

  • The Event: A female student was given ketamine, marijuana, and high-proof alcohol without her consent at a Chi Phi fraternity party in October 2024, followed by sexual assaults involving multiple individuals.
  • The Response: Cornell University initially suspended seven accused students, later allowing some to write essays to mitigate penalties, while only two were ultimately exmatrikulated.
  • The Public Awakening: Months of investigative reporting by the student newspaper The Cornell Daily Sun brought the case to public attention in late 2025, culminating in formal legal action initiated by the survivor.

The October 2024 Assault at the Chi Phi Fraternity House

According to court documents, the victim visited a friend at the Chi Phi fraternity house in Ithaca, New York, where she was given increasing amounts of alcohol while already intoxicated. Her friend subsequently brought her to an upstairs room, where another man joined in pressing her to consume ketamine, marijuana, and additional alcohol. The combination rendered her completely helpless. During the subsequent sexual acts, the victim attempted to push away a newly arrived man by hand.

While the assault took place, one of the participants broadcast a message into a local Snapchat group chat operated by the Chi Phi chapter, promising “free” sex to anyone who came to the room. Screenshots submitted to the court show that responses from group members were uniformly positive, expressing admiration for the sender. Four additional men entered the room, where they distributed and consumed ketamine powder directly on the victim’s naked body while ignoring her defensive reflexes, such as pulling the bedsheet over herself. Five of the men eventually left, while two remained to force further ketamine consumption and resume the assault until the victim lost consciousness.

Disciplinary Actions and Institutional Investigation by Cornell University

In November 2024, the victim reported the attack to the campus police. Cornell University initially suspended the seven accused students but permitted them to mitigate their punishments by writing essays regarding their actions. Ultimately, two of the accused were exmatrikulated, while the remaining five were permitted to continue their studies. In November 2024, the university issued a public statement, followed in January 2025 by an independent investigation into campus sexual misconduct.

Pressure grows on DA, Cornell after fraternity sexual assault allegations

Published on November 4, 2025, the investigation concluded that Cornell University suffered from a troubling prevalence of sexual misconduct. The local Chi Phi chapter was closed as a direct consequence. Despite knowledge of the event among university administrators, campus police, and members of the Snapchat chat, no formal criminal charges were filed by any institutional authority. It was only after the survivor filed her own criminal complaint that the legal system initiated a comprehensive review of the case.

Investigation and Resistance from the Student Body

The student newspaper The Cornell Daily Sun drove the public exposure of the events. Reporter Cereese Qusba conducted months of investigation before publishing detailed coverage of the lawsuit in September 2025. In an accompanying editorial, the newsroom staff condemned the institutional handling of the case, writing: “We refuse to let this victim be reduced to another story.”
