Cork householders held and photographed alleged burglars before retrieving their property, court told

Home Invaders Detained, Photographed, and Released by Residents

In a bizarre turn of events, homeowners in the early hours of Saturday morning confronted two intruders, retrieved stolen possessions, and then took photos of them before letting them go. The unusual incident led to a court appearance on Monday for one of the suspects.

The Confrontation

The incident occurred around 1:30 a.m. on June 28, when residents, asleep upstairs, heard noises from below. Initially, they assumed it was other occupants of the home. After approximately fifteen minutes, one resident witnessed a male and female searching drawers in a bedroom.

The homeowners restrained the suspects, bringing them to the ground floor. One resident took photos and videos of the individuals. Recovered items were found in the suspects’ pockets. Afterwards, the pair departed the property.

The Aftermath

Following their departure, a pedal cycle, a laptop, and a wallet were discovered missing. Police were notified and took details. From the photograph taken, the male suspect was identified as Calvin O’Connor of 2 Gerald Griffin Street, Blackpool, less than 50 meters from the scene.

It was also alleged that some stolen property was recovered at the defendant’s residence. Joseph Cuddigan, a solicitor, represented O’Connor in court. Judge Mary Dorgan remanded the accused in custody until July 7 after the State objected to bail.

Repeat Offender?

The 19-year-old, Calvin O’Connor, appeared before Cork District Court on Monday. He was charged with involvement in the burglary and was arrested by Garda Kevin Motherway. Adding to the situation, O’Connor had previously been released on bail on Friday, June 27, on two shoplifting charges.

Garda Motherway contested bail being granted to the accused. He stated, “It is alleged that at approximately 1.30am on June 28 the residents at the address were sleeping upstairs when they heard noise downstairs.”

The rate of burglaries has increased by 10% in the last year, reflecting a broader trend across the country. (Source 2024)
