Ethiopia to Host COP32, Australia and Türkiye Remain in Impasse for COP31
Ethiopia has been selected to host the 2027 united Nations Climate Change Conference (COP32), securing the influential role over a bid from Nigeria. The endorsement from fellow African nations was announced by Ethiopian Ambassador to Brazil, Leulseged Tadese Abebe, during a plenary session at the ongoing COP30 summit in Belem, Brazil.
“We are deeply grateful for the trust and confidence bestowed on the Ethiopian people and government,” abebe stated, adding that “COP32 will play a major role in guiding climate action in this critical decade.”
The selection of host countries for COP summits rotates regionally and requires unanimous agreement within each region. While official adoption of Ethiopia’s bid remains,it is widely considered a formality.
Though, the choice of host for the 2026 COP31 conference remains unresolved. A months-long deadlock persists between Australia and Türkiye, both vying to host the summit within the “Western Europe and others” group. Australia has partnered with Pacific Island nations – particularly vulnerable to climate change – in its bid.
The ongoing dispute has prompted calls for resolution. on Monday, officials urged the Western European group to reach an agreement. Should they fail, the conference would be held in Bonn, Germany, home to the UN climate agency, a scenario German officials acknowledge as a fallback option, stating they “would have to, but we do not want to.”
