The Haema blood and plasma donation service in Halle (Saale) currently has less willingness to donate. Especially on hot summer days, many donor loungers remain empty. The privately organized service provider therefore warns of possible bottlenecks when supplying blood.

While many people enjoy summer vacation, there is a lack of donors. However, the need in hospitals remains consistently high. Haema recalls that blood preparations cannot be made artificially and can only be kept to a limited extent. They are also essential for medical care during the holiday season.

Statistically speaking, every third Halle is dependent on a blood donation in the course of his life. However, only around three percent of the population currently donate regularly. According to Haema, about a third would generally be possible for a donation – healthy adults from the age of 18 with a body weight over 50 kilograms. The age structure also complicates the situation: Many currently active donors are part of the baby boomer generation and will be in prospect of age.

Haema therefore particularly appeals to young people to donate now. In the air -conditioned donation center in Neustädter Passage 17 a, donors can expect a small thank you in the form of an ice after the bloodletting. The fact that the economic benefit of a blood donation for the company is far beyond this symbolic effort is rarely discussed. Three years ago, donor at Haema received at least one expense change of 20 euros if one Report of the Tagesschau can believe.

Haema is part of the internationally active health group Grifol, which produces and sells biopharmaceutical medication from donated blood plasma. Haema operates 40 donation centers in Germany. The donations not only flow into the direct care of hospitals, but also into industrial processing processes for the production of medication – for example for the treatment of autoimmune diseases or in oncology.

In addition to classic blood and plasma donations, Haema also offers thrombocyte and leukocyte donations, which are used, among other things, for modern cell therapies such as car-t cell therapy. For this purpose, Haema works with the Fraunhofer Institute for Cell Therapy and Immunology (IZI) in Leipzig.
