Conceptos Plásticos builds houses and schools using recycled plastic

Conceptos Plásticos builds houses and schools using recycled plastic

October 3, 2026 Dr. Michael Lee – Health Editor Health

Facing a difficult and costly transport of materials from Bogotá, musician Fernando Llanos built his house on his land in Cundinamarca, Colombia, using large interlocking recycled plastic blocks, lesnumeriques.com reported. Transporting supplies from Bogotá took up to seven hours, prompting Llanos to seek a lightweight alternative that cost up to thirteen times less than new plastic after learning the trade.

The Tech TL;DR:

  • Recycled plastic blocks snap together like Lego pieces to construct walls without mortar or glue.
  • A standard two-bedroom house uses about five tons of waste material and takes roughly five days to assemble.
  • The finished structures are resistant to fire and earthquakes, though the blocks present cleaning challenges in humid spaces like bathrooms.

The construction method relies on interlocking components developed through initial trials that led Llanos to architect Óscar Andrés Méndez. Méndez launched the project Conceptos Plásticos in Bogotá, an initiative that collects items like food packaging, shampoo bottles, and plastic bags to process them into building columns and blocks composed of nearly 95 percent recycled material. Workers sort, shred, melt, and mold the waste into modular shapes. These units dry-stack without adhesive, which accelerates assembly and simplifies freight logistics to isolated plots.

A typical residential layout measuring a standard size includes two bedrooms, a bathroom, a living area, a dining room, and a kitchen. Assembling the shell requires about five days utilizing five tons of recycled polymer. Méndez estimates the structural lifespan of these buildings reaches roughly 200 years, while maintaining thermal insulation properties and resisting seismic activity and fire.

Beyond individual builds, Conceptos Plásticos applied the technology to construct a refuge in Guapi for 42 families displaced by violence in Colombia. That operation consumed 200 tonnes of plastic and required 28 days to complete, a timeline still faster than conventional masonry for a settlement of that scale. Because the blocks assemble dry, the resulting shelters remain entirely demountable and relocatable.

The system subsequently expanded internationally to Côte d’Ivoire. Over the preceding year, more than 3,500 tonnes of waste plastic yielded over 550 classrooms built at roughly 60 percent of the cost of standard construction. To service remote regions lacking industrial infrastructure, Conceptos Plásticos engineered a miniaturized production unit housed inside a 12-meter freight container.

UNICEF Notes Material Limitations in Sanitary Spaces

Operational deployment revealed specific performance boundaries. According to UNICEF, the porous surface texture of the molded blocks complicates cleaning and maintenance, making them unsuited for unsealed bathroom interiors. Project organizers subsequently integrated alternative materials and surface coatings to address sanitation requirements in wet zones.

What began as a localized workaround for an inaccessible rural plot has scaled into an international method for diverting tons of plastic waste into structural walls, cutting construction timelines, and delivering educational infrastructure to underserved regions.
