CommBank Expands Credit Card Range With New Premium Charge Card

August 18, 2026 Priya Shah – Business Editor Business

Commonwealth Bank of Australia is overhauling its consumer payment suite, introducing an exclusive new charge card to complement its existing Smart and Ultimate credit products. According to community disclosures and financial reporting from Australian Frequent Flyer, the strategic shakeup alters tier-based rewards structures, monthly fees, and loyalty point transfer ratios heading into upcoming fiscal quarters.

Restructuring the Rewards Tiers and Earning Rates

The product refresh ditches the legacy “Awards” branding, consolidating the core lineup into two streamlined products known as the Smart and Ultimate cards. CommBank Yello tiers will dictate points-earning capabilities across these accounts. Base tier cardholders will earn 0.5 points per dollar spent, while plus tier users secure 0.75 points. Gold tier members receive 1 point per dollar, and diamond tier clients capture a maximum of 1.5 points per dollar. International purchases break from this tier system, granting a flat 2 points per dollar regardless of status.

Modifying Fees, Credits, and Point Transfers

Monthly account fees remain pegged at $35 for the Ultimate card and $19 for the Smart card. However, traditional fee-waiver criteria are being phased out in favor of monthly credit allocations. The Ultimate card introduces a $25 travel credit paired with a $10 dining credit. The Smart card implements a corresponding $10 travel credit and $10 dining credit structure, rendering both products effectively fee-free for active users who maximize the allotments. Meanwhile, the Smart card drops its previous fee-free international transaction perks.

Points redemption options feature distinct conversion rates and partner fees. Cardholders can transfer points to Qantas Frequent Flyer at a 3:1 ratio subject to a $149 fee, or route points to Virgin Australia at a 2.5:1 ratio alongside a promotional 20% bonus spanning the first six months. Additional transfer avenues include Qatar Airways at 2.5:1, Myer at 2:1, and Everyday Rewards at a 1.5:1 ratio, providing an indirect pathway back into Qantas.
