Columbus Zoo Giraffes Get a Treat Thanks to AEP Ohio
Everyone, including zoo animals, deserves a summer treat. The Columbus Zoo and Aquarium is partnering with AEP Ohio to provide just that for its giraffe population.
Trim to Treat: A Sweet Deal for Giraffes
AEP Ohio’s forestry team regularly trims trees and branches to keep power lines clear, preventing outages. But instead of discarding the trimmings, they’re donating them to the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium and The Wilds as part of their Trim to Treat
partnership.
These fresh tree trimmings, known as browse, are not only a tasty treat but also provide essential nutrients and enrichment for the animals.

Did You Know?
browse, or fresh tree trimmings, provides essential nutrients and fiber that are vital for a giraffe’s digestive health. It also mimics their natural foraging behavior, providing mental stimulation.
The Importance of Forestry Management
AEP Ohio’s forestry team plays a crucial role in maintaining reliable power. By trimming trees and branches near power lines, they prevent outages caused by falling limbs. This proactive approach not only keeps the lights on but also provides a valuable resource for the Columbus Zoo and The Wilds.
Our forestry team works year-round to trim and remove trees and branches around our power lines throughout Ohio. This helps prevent future outages that can be caused by trees or branches coming in contact with electric wires.Through the Trim to TreatⓇ partnership, some of these fresh trimmings are shared with the Zoo and The Wilds to benefit the animals.
