Colts Trade DeForest Buckner and Quenton Nelson to Start Full Rebuild
On Tuesday, the Indianapolis Colts traded defensive tackle DeForest Buckner to the San Francisco 49ers and All-Pro guard Quenton Nelson to the Seattle Seahawks, moves that follow a 2-5 start to the season and signal a full franchise rebuild.
The transactions follow the dismissal of general manager Chris Ballard last week during his 10th season on the job. Assistant general manager Ed Dodds engineered the trades under the direction of owner Carlie Irsay-Gordon. Buckner returns to San Francisco, the team that originally drafted him before trading him to Indianapolis in 2020. Nelson joins the Seattle Seahawks, a primary NFC West rival of the 49ers. Both players entered Tuesday in the final year of their respective contracts.
Trading Veteran Assets for 2027 Draft Capital
The Colts executed the trades to replenish draft assets ahead of future drafts. Indianapolis traded away its 2027 first-round selection to the New York Jets to complete last year’s trade for Sauce Gardner. Tuesday’s moves recovered additional picks to offset that deficit.
The deal with Seattle for Nelson brought back a 2027 third-round choice and a 2028 fifth-round selection. The trade sending Buckner back to San Francisco netted a 2027 fourth-round choice. Following these transactions, the franchise holds a single second-round pick in 2027, two third-round choices, and two fourth-round selections.
Frustration among veteran players preceded the roster overhaul. Following a loss to the Minnesota Vikings on Sunday that dropped the team to 2-5, Buckner expressed his dissatisfaction to reporters. I don’t know, how ’bout you guess,
Buckner said when asked how he felt about the third defeat. I’m frustrated. Same thing. We lost.
Historical Context of Franchise Performance
Tuesday’s decisions mark an abrupt shift for a front office that spent years trying various roster iterations and quarterback acquisitions to replace Andrew Luck, whose retirement in 2019 upended the franchise. Despite acquiring standout talents like Buckner and Nelson, the team struggled to secure postseason success.

Indianapolis has not won the AFC South division title since 2014. The club last reached the playoffs in 2020, and its last postseason victory occurred in 2018. Over the past five seasons, the team averaged 7.6 wins annually.
Salary Cap Space Exceeds 60 Million Dollars
The front office enters the upcoming spring with projected salary cap space well north of $60 million. Additional financial flexibility could open if the team trades running back Jonathan Taylor or moves away from quarterback Daniel Jones, both of whom have drawn interest from other clubs alongside nose tackle Grover Stewart and receiver Josh Downs.
