Jio launches India’s biggest IPO targeting 10.3tn rupees valuation
Mukesh Ambani’s Jio Platforms launched what could be India’s biggest-ever initial public offering, targeting a valuation of up to 10.3tn rupees as shares float following a stock market downturn. Backed by major technology firms and global fund managers, the Mumbai-based telecoms business aims to raise up to 302bn rupees.
Jio Targets 10.3tn Rupees Valuation in Share Sale
Reliance Industries set a price range of 1,065 rupees to 1,119 rupees a share for the maiden share sale, offering up to 270m new shares. At the upper end of that price band, Jio hits a 10.3tn rupees valuation, securing its position as India’s fourth-largest company. It trails behind parent company Reliance Industries, Bharti Airtel, and HDFC Bank.
This valuation marks a substantial expansion from 2020. Meta Platforms and Google invested when the enterprise held a 4.9tn-rupee valuation. However, the current top valuation sits below initial expectations of more than £110bn noted in a draft prospectus released during the summer. The offering arrives during a broader stock market slowdown in India, with the blue-chip Nifty 50 index down more than 12% this year.
Institutional Backing and Employee Participation
The company secured 212 anchor investors ahead of the blockbuster IPO launch. Major institutional participants include BlackRock, Singapore’s sovereign wealth fund, the Abu Dhabi Investment Authority, Fidelity Investments, Schroders, JP Morgan Asset Management, Franklin Templeton, Invesco, and Prudential. Retail investors gained access to the share offering on Wednesday, with the subscription period scheduled to close on Friday.
The family-owned conglomerate encouraged internal participation by offering its 400,000-plus employees a discount of 54 rupees a share. Led by Akash Ambani, the oldest son of patriarch Mukesh Ambani, Jio operates as a subsidiary of Reliance Industries. The business launched its initial telecoms services in September 2016, securing 16 million subscribers in the first month and clearing 100 million subscribers within 170 days.

Isha Ambani Outlines Jio Origin and AI Expansion
Isha Ambani, a director on Jio’s board, outlined the origin of the enterprise to investors. She explained that the business concept arose from connectivity challenges she and her brother Akash experienced upon returning to India from studies in the US around 2009 and 2010. Struggling to submit a college assignment due to failed internet access, the siblings initiated discussions regarding digital infrastructure limitations in the country.
Following the market debut, Jio intends to direct capital toward expanding operations into artificial intelligence, cloud computing, and digital infrastructure.
