Colombia’s Marcela Mar, Javier Drolas to Star in ‘Imperfect

Natalia Smirnoff, known for her work at festivals like the Berlinale and Sundance, is set to direct a new drama. Smirnoff expressed her excitement about portraying a main character who makes mistakes, aiming to foster understanding rather than judgment and encourage women to examine their self-imposed standards.

This Colombia-Canada-Argentina co-production is spearheaded by Colombia’s Diana Camargo, whose credits include “News of a Kidnapping” and “Accidental Twins.” Mar’s Ganas Productions, a co-producer of the Cannes ACID section premiere “Mi Bestia,” is also involved.

the co-producing team includes Canada’s Arantza Maldonado of Fait Divers Média,with credits such as “Havana” and “The Eighth Floor.” Argentina’s juan Pablo Miller of Tarea Fina, whose work includes the Cannes Caméra d’Or winner “Las Acacias,” the Argentinean Oscar entry “the Sleepwalkers,” and the San Sebastián Festival awardee “Sublime,” is also a co-producer.

Elba McAllister’s Cineplex has secured the Latin American distribution rights for the drama. McAllister stated that Cineplex’s involvement began over a year ago after reading the script, anticipating the film will resonate with audiences and spark conversations about understanding and navigating postpartum behavior, describing it as an intense and powerful film.

Currently, Mar is performing in the Colombian stage production “El Padre,” an adaptation of florian Zeller’s play, where she portrays the daughter of the patriarch, played by jairo Camargo. Zeller also directed the film adaptation starring Anthony Hopkins and Olivia Colman.

Additionally, Mar is slated to star in “Débora,” an upcoming biopic about the pioneering Colombian painter Débora arango. The film will be directed by Daniel Posada, known for his work on “El Chapo” and “Tijuana,” with a screenplay by Will Nunziata, whose previous credits include “the Old guitarist” and “Lilith.”
