Climate Talks Conclude Without Phasing Out Fossil fuels, 1.5°C Threshold Imminent
[CITY, DATE] – International climate negotiations ended today, November 22, 2025, without securing commitments to phase out coal, oil, and gas – the primary drivers of global warming. This outcome arrives as scientists now project the internationally agreed-upon limit of 1.5 degrees Celsius warming above pre-industrial levels will be temporarily surpassed as early as the 2030s.
the failure to establish a clear exit strategy for fossil fuels intensifies the climate crisis, threatening increasingly severe weather events worldwide. The ten warmest years on record have occurred in the last decade, underscoring the accelerating pace of planetary heating.Exceeding the 1.5°C threshold, even temporarily, will likely trigger more frequent and intense storms, wildfires, droughts, and floods, disproportionately impacting vulnerable populations and ecosystems.
The Paris Climate Agreement, adopted in 2015, aims to limit global warming to well below 2 degrees Celsius, preferably to 1.5 degrees Celsius, through concerted efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Though, current national pledges are insufficient to meet these goals. The continued reliance on burning fossil fuels - oil, gas, and coal – remains the largest obstacle to achieving climate stability.
