Cleveland Guardians defeat White Sox to reach ALCS against Rays, says ESPN Deportes

The Cleveland Guardians completed a postseason comeback by defeating the Chicago White Sox 2-0 on a Saturday night, advancing to the American League Championship Series against the Tampa Bay Rays, ESPN Deportes reported.

Gavin Williams and José Ramírez Secure Elimination Win

Facing a 0-2 deficit in the best-of-five series, Cleveland rallied to win three consecutive games. Cleveland became just the 11th team to win a best-of-five series among the 96 that fell behind 0-2, the first since the 2017 New York Yankees against the Indians and only the fourth to achieve it after losing the first two games at home. In the decisive game, starting pitcher Gavin Williams struck out 12 batters over 5.2 innings, allowing only one hit and zero runs. Williams did not allow a hit until Kyle Teel hit a knuckle-curve fly ball to right field with two outs in the sixth. According to ESPN Deportes, Williams became just the third pitcher in postseason history to record the final out of one game and start the next when his team faced elimination in both instances. Guardians manager Stephen Vogt stated, It was a great thing today and added, We’ve seen other performances like that in the postseason, but to do it on this stage and in this kind of game facing three elimination games in a row and for one of your starters to say: I’m going to pitch when you need me, is super impressive. Williams’ 12 strikeouts tied Cleveland’s postseason single-game record. He induced 22 swings and misses, and his 24 strikeouts across three games tied for the second-highest total in a best-of-five postseason series. Ramírez hit the home run off a knuckle-curve 0.74 feet above the ground, the lowest pitch hit for a postseason home run since tracking began in 2008, according to MLB Statcast, and the lowest pitch hit by Ramírez in his 14-year major league career.

Relief Pitching and Offensive Struggles for Chicago

Following Williams’ departure, after a walk loaded the bases and Erik Sabrowski entered in relief to strike out Munetaka Murakami, the Cleveland bullpen locked down the victory. Erik Sabrowski, Hunter Gaddis, and Cade Smith combined to shut down the Chicago lineup, permitting just three total hits in the elimination game. Smith earned a five-out save by striking out Tristan Peters for the final out at Progressive Field. Guardians pitchers struck out 21 batters, the most in a nine-inning postseason game. Munetaka Murakami and Andrew Benintendi struck out four times each, and Teel and Chase Meidroth struck out three times apiece. Chicago entered the postseason as the first team to reach the playoffs after enduring three consecutive 100-loss seasons, and the franchise has not won the World Series since 2004.

Upcoming Championship Series Matchup

Cleveland now travels to open the American League Championship Series against the Tampa Bay Rays on Monday night, seeking its first trip to the World Series since 2016. The franchise seeks its first World Series title since 1948, representing the longest active championship drought in Major League Baseball. During the regular season, Tampa Bay held a 5-1 record against the Guardians, which included three shutouts. The two teams previously met in the 2013 Wild Card game won by the Rays and the 2022 Wild Card series swept by the Guardians. The Guardians are classifying for the Championship Series for the second time in the last three seasons.
