City of Boulder Details Schedule for 2026 Indigenous Peoples Day Events

October 11, 2026 Julia Evans – Entertainment Editor Entertainment

The City of Boulder has announced its schedule for the 2026 Indigenous Peoples Day events, providing city funding through its Housing and Human Services department and Office of Arts and Culture to support free public gatherings honoring the culture and contributions of North America’s original inhabitants, according to official municipal releases covered by yellowscene.com and bouldercolorado.gov.

Municipal support for these commemorations stems from Resolution No. 1190, which the Boulder City Council adopted on August 2, 2016, after drafting by the Human Relations Commission and local community members. That resolution officially established the second Monday of October as Indigenous Peoples Day, directing the city to partner with American Indian Tribal Nations and address historical omissions in public resources and cultural programming.

Weekend Lineup of Community Gatherings

Festivities open on Saturday, Oct. 10, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the San Juan del Centro Pavilion, located at 3164 24th St., with an event hosted by the Family Learning Center and Hear Us Now See Us Now. bouldercolorado.gov reported that this family-friendly gathering features a land acknowledgment, Indigenous speakers, traditional and contemporary dancing, music, storytelling, and cultural food.

Later on Saturday, from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m., Rocky Mountain Equality at 3340 Mitchell Lane hosts an Indigenous Peoples Day First Nations Celebration. According to yellowscene.com, the schedule includes traditional dance, cuisine, local Indigenous-operated businesses, Two-Spirit and LGBTQIA+ history speakers, storytelling, and a workshop focused on Indigenous Traditional Ecological Knowledge.

Sunday Events Feature Aztec Culture and Traditional Midwifery

Events continue on Sunday, Oct. 11, from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. at Mi Chantli Studio, located at 1750 30th St. The gathering features traditional Aztec dance and drumming, art and bookmaking workshops, mural creation with a local Indigenous artist, and educational sessions covering Mexica culture, the Aztec calendar, and the Nahuatl language alongside traditional food preparation like tamales and tortilla making.

Concurrent programming on Sunday from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. takes place at the Museum of Boulder, located at 2205 Broadway. The bilingual event highlights traditional midwifery through a presentation by an Indigenous speaker from southeastern Mexico. bouldercolorado.gov noted that the program includes interactive activities centered on ancestral health practices, culturally relevant health care, live music, mindfulness activities, Acudetox, children’s crafts, and wellness kits.

City Staff Integrate Tribal Reports into Planning

Beyond the weekend events, Boulder municipal staff are collaborating with American Indian Tribal Nations to integrate the first half of the Tribal National Ethnographic-Education Report into city planning. This document was developed alongside Tribal Nations and draws from direct interviews with Tribal Representatives.

City staff are also developing a proposed interpretive experience tied to a community connection with the Sand Creek Massacre, previously referred to as the ‘Healing Trail.’ Additional details on municipal collaboration are available through the city’s official Tribal Engagement and Consultation webpage.
