Church Responds with Aid and Hope Following Hurricane Melissa in Caribbean
KINGSTON, JAMAICA – May 15, 2024 – The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is providing humanitarian aid and spiritual comfort to communities across Jamaica, Haiti, and Cuba following the devastation of Hurricane Melissa. Elder Valeri Vladimir Cordón, General Authority Seventy and president of the Caribbean Area, recently shared a video message emphasizing love and hope for those impacted by the storm, published on the Caribbean Press Room.
The Church is collaborating with local authorities and community leaders to deliver essential supplies, including food, water, and other necessities, to hundreds of families. Many volunteers, including those also affected by the hurricane, have participated in the relief efforts, demonstrating “a living expression of the gospel of Jesus Christ,” according to Elder Cordón.
“We express deep gratitude to so many who, in the midst of their own challenges, came to the service of others. Their Christian example reflects the love of the Savior,” Elder Cordón stated.
Recognizing the long road to recovery, the Church has pledged ongoing support to the people of Jamaica throughout the reconstruction process. Elder Cordón expressed confidence that communities will “emerge stronger” through faith and unity. He referenced Helaman 5:12 from the Book of Mormon, stating, “‘And now remember, my children, remember that it is on the rock of our Redeemer, who is christ, the Son of God, that you must establish your foundation.'”
“If we build on Him, no storm can destroy our faith or take away our hope. he offers peace in times of uncertainty, strength when we feel weak, and comfort to our hearts,” Elder Cordón continued.
The Church encourages members and friends to offer prayers for those affected in Jamaica, Haiti, and Cuba, and to demonstrate compassion through acts of service. Donations to the Church’s humanitarian fund will directly support ongoing relief efforts and provide resources to the most vulnerable families and communities.
Elder Cordón concluded, “May God bless you, dear brothers and sisters. It is my testimony that this is the work of the Lord. We are His hands. In the name of Jesus Christ. Amen.”
