Tokyo Commute Gets a Soundtrack: JR East Launches live Musical performances on Chuo Rapid Line
TOKYO – Passengers on Tokyo’s Chuo rapid Line can now enjoy live musical performances during their commute, thanks to a new initiative launched by JR East. Beginning November 22, 2025, select round-trip trains on Saturdays and Sundays will feature performances, including beloved themes from Studio Ghibli anime.
The performances aim to enhance the travel experience and offer a unique cultural moment for commuters and tourists alike. JR East is piloting the program on the Chuo Rapid line, a key artery connecting Tokyo with western suburbs, hoping to attract riders and inject vibrancy into daily travel. The initiative comes as Japan’s railway companies increasingly seek innovative ways to engage passengers and boost ridership in a competitive transportation landscape.
The musical performances will take place during the 40-minute stretch between Tachikawa and Shinjuku Stations. Trains will depart Toyoda Station at 1:41 p.m.heading towards Tokyo Station, and then operate the same route in reverse, leaving Tokyo Station at 2:42 p.m.
While passengers can theoretically board at any station along the route to enjoy the concert portion, securing a seat on the first floor of Car 5 is recommended for the best experience. Green Car seating on the Chuo Rapid Line is unreserved, meaning ticket holders can choose any available seat.
