Chris Rock explains why he refused to help pay Roger Logan's legal fees

Chris Rock explains why he refused to help pay Roger Logan’s legal fees

October 6, 2026 Emma Walker – News Editor News

Comedian Chris Rock recently revealed that he refused a repeated request to help pay for a defense attorney for Roger Logan, a Brooklyn man who spent 17 years in prison before his second-degree murder conviction was overturned. Speaking on The New York Times’ “The Interview,” Rock explained that he maintained a personal policy against covering legal expenses because he viewed them as unpredictable costs that could continue growing, even though he was willing to help people with mortgages and education.

Roger Logan served 17 years behind bars after his conviction for the 1997 shooting death of Sherwin Gibbons in Brooklyn. Prosecutors had secured a 25-year-to-life sentence based heavily on an eyewitness who identified Logan as the shooter. However, a later review by the Brooklyn District Attorney’s Conviction Review Unit uncovered records showing that witness had been arrested one day before the shooting. In June 2014, prosecutors asked a judge to vacate the conviction, leading to Logan’s release and a subsequent $3.75 million settlement with New York City in 2016.

Rock Refused to Fund Logan's Legal Expenses

Rock’s refusal stands in contrast to the millions Logan eventually secured through a settlement after years lost. The comedian acknowledged that he had the financial means to assist Logan’s brother, who repeatedly pleaded for funds to hire a lawyer during the imprisonment. While Rock was willing to aid people with mortgages, education and other financial needs, legal expenses represented a cost that he rejected.

The reinvestigation that ultimately freed Logan was conducted by the Brooklyn District Attorney’s Conviction Review Unit rather than private legal representation funded by outside donors. Investigators found that the evidence used against Logan had significant problems. The National Registry of Exonerations cites mistaken witness identification, false accusation or perjury and official misconduct as contributing factors.

Growing Up in Brooklyn and the Reality of False Accusations

Reflecting on the case, Rock connected Logan’s ordeal to the broader vulnerability faced by Black men within the criminal justice system. The comedian noted that Black men get accused of things they didn’t do all the time. This perspective stems directly from his own experiences growing up in the Bedford-Stuyvesant neighborhood of Brooklyn, where he recalled being placed in police lineups multiple times and experiencing the fear of someone behind the glass identifying him.

Those formative experiences in New York City shape how Rock views accusations today. While he recognizes that paying for another attorney offered no certainty of an earlier release, the decision to withhold financial assistance remains difficult for him to reconcile.
