China’s Type 054B Frigates Boost Missile Capacity by 50% With 48 VLS Cells
Satellite imagery analysis reveals that China may have quietly expanded the vertical launch missile capacity on its newest class of naval warships by 50 percent. According to reports from Bloomberg, South China Morning Post, and Interesting Engineering, the People’s Liberation Army Navy has increased the missile cells on its Type 054B frigates to 48 vertical launch cells, marking a significant strategic shift in naval firepower.

Evaluating the Type 054B Missile Cell Expansion
According to assessments published by Defense Security Asia and Meta-Defense, the Type 054B design successfully integrates an expanded 48-cell vertical launch system array without sacrificing the vessel’s primary anti-submarine mission profile. This structural adjustment represents a major upgrade over the predecessor Type 054A class.

The commissioning of the first Type 054B frigate, named the Luohe, marked a turning point for Chinese naval manufacturing. The vessel displaces approximately 5,000 tons and features a stealthier design with a clean superstructure meant to reduce its radar cross-section.
Australia-based PLAN analyst Alex Luck noted in interviews with TWZ that the ship’s design focuses heavily on indigenous systems rather than legacy Russian-derived equipment. The sensor suite on the Luohe includes a two-sided, rotating electronically scanned array primary radar atop the main mast and an electronic warfare system extending from the secondary mast.
Furthermore, the ship moves away from dedicated illumination radars used for older surface-to-air missile guidance systems. The main deck gun is fitted with an improved version of the H/PJ-87 100mm cannon, accompanied by a Type 1130 close-in defense weapon system featuring an 11-barrel Gatling-type rotary cannon positioned just in front of the superstructure.
Strategic Implications and Fleet Integration
The Pentagon warned late last year about Beijing’s growing industrial capacity to rapidly produce high-end naval vessels. The Type 054B class is widely viewed by international observers as a potential future backbone for the Chinese combat fleet, though only two vessels of this class have been built thus far.
