China’s Space Station to Become Global Research Platform, Says First Astronaut

October 9, 2026 Lucas Fernandez – World Editor World

Yang Liwei, China’s first astronaut and deputy chief designer of the China Manned Space Agency, announced that the country’s orbiting space station will open as a global research platform for scientists worldwide. Speaking at the 77th International Astronautical Congress in Antalya, Türkiye, the initiative invites broad international participation in scientific research, astronaut training, and educational outreach.

The five-day congress, which will wrap up on Friday, gathered space agency leaders, astronauts, and industry engineers from around the globe to discuss multilateral cooperation. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan addressed the opening ceremonies on October 5, 2026, welcoming international delegations as the host nation expands its own aerospace ambitions.

Pakistan Trains Astronauts for 2026 Mission

Two Pakistani astronaut candidates are currently participating in joint training programs alongside their Chinese counterparts. Yang stated that these candidates have performed exceptionally well throughout the rigorous preparation process. The station will welcome its first foreign astronaut in the second half of 2026, when a Pakistani crew member executes a short-duration mission serving as a payload specialist.

Beyond low Earth orbit, China is also inviting global participation in its crewed lunar exploration roadmap. Yang outlined plans for the international lunar scientific research station, stating that Beijing welcomes partners worldwide to contribute to the facility’s construction and long-term scientific utilization.

Commercial Aerospace Expansion and International Partnerships

Private sector participation formed a major component of the discussions in Antalya, highlighting how commercial manufacturing is transforming the global space economy. Jinlin Chen, founder and CEO of the Beijing-based space technology firm Final Frontier, told Xinhua that China’s commercial aerospace sector has evolved rapidly over the past decade. Chen described the domestic private space industry as having grown from zero to one, pointing to recent advancements in reusable rocket technology as the primary driver behind reduced launch costs and expanded satellite deployment.

Commercial Operators Test Payloads in Microgravity

While state agencies negotiate the parameters of the upcoming lunar research station, commercial operators continue to test new payloads and manufacturing techniques in microgravity.
