Eight people died and two were injured in an explosion at a fireworks shop in Jiangsu province, China, on Saturday, February 15th, the first day of the Lunar New Year holiday, according to reports from Chinese state media. The incident occurred around 2:30 PM local time in Dong’an Village, Donghai County.
Initial investigations suggest the fire began after fireworks ignited by a resident spread to the shop, KBS News reported. Authorities have not released details about the resident or the specific type of fireworks involved.
The explosion prompted a discussion about safety regulations surrounding the sale and use of fireworks during the traditionally celebratory Spring Festival, as well known as Chinese New Year. News agency Xinhua reported that authorities are strengthening safety oversight following the incident.
The tragedy comes as Chinese authorities are also employing drones to monitor and enforce restrictions on illegal fireworks displays, KBS News reported. The use of drones represents a new approach to managing the risks associated with widespread firework use during the holiday period.
The incident is the latest in a series of safety concerns surrounding fireworks during the Spring Festival. The scale of the casualties marks a significant event during the holiday, which is typically a time for family gatherings and celebrations.
