Chilean Football Authority Nears Debt Resolution with New Tournament on the Horizon
SANTIAGO, CHILE – Chilean football is poised for a potential financial lifeline as the Asociación Nacional de Fútbol Profesional (ANFP) reportedly reaches a pre-agreement with Warner Bros. Revelation to address a ample $36 million debt. The debt stems from a recent arbitration ruling against the ANFP, a consequence of disruptions to the Chilean football season in 2019 and 2020 due to social unrest and the COVID-19 pandemic.
The ANFP, led by President Pablo Milad, lost the arbitration case and is obligated to pay the critically important sum, a figure that is non-appealable given the mediation process. However, according to 24-hour journalist Fernando Tapia, a “pre-agreement was achieved between the parties” in recent hours, paving the way for a structured payment plan.
“During the last hours a pre-agreement was achieved between the parties so that there are payment facilities,” Tapia reported, adding that the agreement is expected to be formally sealed next week at the council of Presidents meeting.
Central to the potential resolution is a proposed new tournament format. Driven by a request from the television signal holding Chilean football broadcast rights for more matches in the 2026 season, the ANFP has been exploring options. While a return to a playoff system was initially considered and then dismissed, a new competition – bearing a resemblance to the League Cup – has emerged as a viable solution.
This proposed tournament isn’t simply about adding games to the schedule; it carries significant sporting weight. The winning team, or possibly multiple qualifying teams, would earn a coveted spot in the prestigious Copa Libertadores, South america’s premier club competition. This incentive aims to boost the tournament’s appeal and generate additional revenue for the ANFP.
The introduction of this new competition represents a strategic move by the ANFP to navigate a challenging financial landscape and secure the future of Chilean football. The agreement with Warner Bros. Discovery, if finalized, will alleviate immediate financial pressure, while the new tournament offers a pathway to increased revenue and enhanced competition.
