Children F flee Football Training as Petrol Bombs Thrown in Derry Sectarian Violence
Children participating in football training were forced to flee for safety on Monday night as sectarian violence erupted at a cross-community sports hub in Derry. The clashes unfolded at the interface between the nationalist Top of the Hill and the unionist Irish Street area in the Waterside during what marked the second night of disorder in the city.
The disturbance is believed to be linked to the ongoing standoff between nationalist residents and the Orange Order at Drumcree. Trouble began shortly after 8pm in the Strabane Old Road and Irish Street area after masked youths gathered, leading to police officers coming under attack with petrol bombs and masonry before calm was eventually restored at approximately 10pm.
Violence at the Waterside Shared Village
The unrest directly disrupted community activities and terrified local residents. UUP Alderman Janice Montgomery stated that children at football training had to run for safety, while elderly individuals were left frightened in their own homes.
During the violence, a Sinn Féin constituency office on Spencer Road in the Waterside was also targeted, resulting in smashed windows on Monday night.
Police and Political Response
PSNI Area Commander Chief Superintendent Gillian Kearney stated that police will increase their presence across the city to identify those involved and make arrests. Acknowledging that tensions are high, she emphasized that the unfolding disorder over two nights was not an acceptable response and caused fear for residents.
Sinn Féin councillor Christopher Jackson condemned the actions, stating that the disorder was designed to stoke tensions and bring communities backward.
