Chihuahua Resumes Cattle Exports to U.S. with 750-Head Shipment After GBG Restrictions

Resumption of Cross-Border Trade at San Jerónimo

The Secretaría de Desarrollo Rural shared video footage marking the reopening of the crucial export route. Gabriel Ayala, director general of animal health for the Servicio Nacional de Sanidad, Inocuidad y Calidad Agroalimentaria (Senasica), alongside state rural development secretary Mauro Parada Muñoz and Álvaro Bustillos, president of the Unión Ganadera Regional de Chihuahua, observed the initial inspection process.

Mauro Parada Muñoz attributed the reopening to coordinated efforts among local producers, the regional cattlemen’s union, and sanitary authorities from both Mexico and the United States. “It is an achievement on the part of all cattlemen and a lot of work by federal authorities, both American and Mexican, of Senasica, CPA, OIRSA, and the State Government itself, for seeking and providing the facilities for this reactivation,” Parada Muñoz stated, according to state documentation.

Phased Expansion and Sanitary Protocols

Operations at the border crossing commenced with 750 animals. State officials plan to scale up export volume week by week, aiming for an eventual target of approximately 100,000 exported cattle to support both domestic and American markets.

Strict sanitary controls remain in place to protect against the resurgence of the New World screwworm. The San Jerónimo facility currently deploys 17 veterinarians for pre-inspection duties alongside four canine units tasked with rigorous health screenings.

“It is of great benefit to both the American market and the Mexican side. Thank you to the cattlemen who are always doing the job right; we feel proud of the cattle produced in our state,” Parada Muñoz added.

Ongoing Prevention and Regional Support

While cross-border traffic recovers under binational agreements, regional agricultural authorities are maintaining aggressive preventive measures. The Secretaría de Desarrollo Rural continues training programs for ranchers, distributing educational materials on detection protocols, and supplying preventive kits to secure early identification of any potential GBG cases.

“Today we saw cattle leave Chihuahua again bound for the United States. And behind that first crossing there is much more than 750 heads: there is hope,” the Secretaría de Desarrollo Rural noted in its public statements, emphasizing the resilience of local producers who maintained herd care throughout the suspension period.
