Chicago O’Hare Delays Lifted; 900+ Flights Canceled Nationwide

CHICAGO⁣ (WLS) – ​A‌ temporary ground stop ‍at Chicago O’Hare International Airport, ⁢implemented Saturday due to staffing issues stemming from the‌ ongoing government shutdown, has ​been lifted as of ⁣Saturday afternoon, according to the Federal⁤ Aviation ⁢Administration.‍ While local disruptions‍ have ⁢eased, ⁢the nationwide impact of the shutdown continues to mount, with over 900 flights canceled across the U.S.

The ground stop at O’Hare⁣ lasted from 11:24 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. Central Time, with​ initial forecasts indicating a potential extension. Together, a departure delay impacting flights was also in effect, averaging 15 minutes and​ increasing throughout the afternoon. These disruptions are a direct outcome of federal employees working​ without pay,with some reportedly seeking additional employment to cover expenses during the shutdown.The FAA is currently ​limiting flight capacity at 40 major U.S. airports‍ in response to the staffing challenges.As of 10 p.m. ​Saturday, O’Hare reported⁢ 100 flight cancellations, ‌and Midway‍ Airport recorded 18 cancellations. The situation highlights ‌the vulnerability of the nation’s air travel system⁣ during prolonged⁢ government closures and the immediate financial strain placed on‌ federal workers.
