Chelsea Olivia’s 4 Surgeries in Malaysia: Doctor Explains Possible Causes

Jakarta – Actress Chelsea Olivia recently underwent four medical procedures simultaneously at a hospital in Malaysia, she revealed via her personal Instagram account. The procedures included hysteroscopy, polypectomy, dilatation and curettage (D&C), and endometrial resection, according to a report by DetikHealth.

“Now I’m in the recovery process after small surgery Hysteroscopy, Polypectomy, D&C, Endometrial Resection. If I get better, I’ll tell you why this happened,” Olivia wrote in a post that has circulated widely on social media, including on Instagram and Facebook.

While Olivia has not detailed the specific medical condition prompting the procedures, she has assured her followers that she is currently recovering. Dr. Andon Hestiantoro, a specialist in obstetrics and gynecology and a consultant in fertility, explained that the series of procedures generally relate to disorders within the uterine cavity, particularly in patients experiencing abnormal bleeding.

According to Dr. Hestiantoro, hysteroscopy involves using a small camera to directly visualize the inside of the uterus, allowing doctors to assess for abnormalities such as thickening of the uterine lining (endometrium) or the presence of abnormal tissue growth like uterine polyps (endometrial polyps). “Hysteroscopy is usually performed if a patient experiences complaints such as abnormal vaginal bleeding,” he stated.

If polyps are detected, a polypectomy – the removal of the polyp – is typically performed. The D&C procedure then involves taking a sample of tissue from the uterine lining for pathological anatomy examination to determine if any abnormal cells are present. Finally, endometrial resection utilizes a specialized instrument called a resectoscope to remove a portion of the thickened endometrium, often to stop excessive uterine bleeding.

Dr. Hestiantoro noted that patients may experience bleeding two to three times a month, or very heavy bleeding, often accompanied by thickening of the uterine wall and polyps. Possible causes for thickening of the uterine lining and the development of polyps include obesity, the use of certain hormonal medications, or other hormonal imbalances causing estrogen imbalances.

The doctor indicated that the treatment Olivia received is appropriate, focusing on removing the abnormal tissue first. Further therapy will be determined after the results of the pathological anatomy examination are available. “Once the results of the pathology anatomy are known, the next therapy will be determined,” he said.
