Chelsea Nearing Ajax Star Signing, Eyes Dutch Teammate
Stamford Bridge Club Targets Defensive Reinforcements Amidst Busy Transfer Window
Chelsea is on the verge of securing the services of highly-rated defender Jorrel Hato from Ajax. In parallel, the club has initiated discussions with RB Leipzig concerning a potential transfer for Netherlands international Xavi Simons.
Defensive Anchor on the Horizon
Personal terms are reportedly agreed with Hato, a young talent who has already surpassed 100 senior appearances for Ajax, despite only recently turning 19. Negotiations for a transfer fee in the region of €40 million (£35 million) are said to be in their closing stages.
Exciting Dutch Duo Targeted
Manager Enzo Maresca is keen to bolster his squad depth, particularly at left-back and in the centre of defence. Hato, who captained Ajax at just 17 years old and has earned six senior caps for the Netherlands, offers versatility in both positions, marking him as one of Europe’s most promising young players.
Simons Pursuit Signals Attacking Ambition
Adding to their summer acquisitions of Liam Delap, João Pedro, and Jamie Gittens, Chelsea is also optimistic about finalising a deal for Xavi Simons. The 22-year-old attacking midfielder, who can operate across various forward roles, made a €50 million move to RB Leipzig from Paris Saint-Germain in January. A fee potentially reaching €70 million is anticipated for his transfer. While Bayern Munich has also shown interest, Simons is understood to favour a move to the Premier League.
This significant transfer activity follows a period of player departures from Stamford Bridge, including Kepa Arrizabalaga, Noni Madueke, and Djordje Petrovic. Additionally, João Félix recently completed a £44 million transfer to Saudi Pro League club Al-Nassr.
The pursuit of young talent like Hato reflects a broader trend in top European leagues. For example, in the 2023-24 season, the average age of players making their debut in Europe’s top five leagues continued a downward trend, highlighting the increasing investment in emerging stars (Deloitte Football Money League 2024).
