Champions League: Iraola Urges Liverpool to Neutralize Fenerbahce’s Hostile Atmosphere
Andoni Iraola Seeks to Silence Fenerbahce Crowd in Champions League Clash
Liverpool head coach Andoni Iraola has urged his squad to quiet a raucous Istanbul crowd during Wednesday’s Champions League fixture by neutralizing the momentum generated by Fenerbahce supporters.
The fixture at the Sukru Saracoglu stadium presents a daunting test for a side seeking to rebound domestically. Iraola acknowledged the severe environment awaiting his players in Turkey. The Spanish manager stated that his team must disrupt the connection between the opposing players and their passionate fan base right from kickoff.
“Tomorrow, it’s not going to be easy. It’s always difficult to come to Turkey and play and we have to be very ready,” Iraola said on Tuesday. “They have experienced players who know how to play in this competition. We have to try to kill the confidence and momentum they can have with the supporters.”
Liverpool enter the match holding a 100 percent record in the current Champions League campaign. They have secured victories by scoring six goals against LASK, four against Villarreal, and two against Atletico Madrid. Those European performances stand in stark contrast to their domestic output, where they have managed 11 goals in nine Premier League matches.
The squad arrived in Istanbul following a difficult 1-0 defeat against Premier League champions Arsenal. That weekend fixture marked the first time since records began in 2003 that Liverpool failed to register a single shot on target in a home league match. The resulting gap leaves fifth-placed Liverpool nine points behind league leaders Arsenal.
Attacking Improvements and Squad Absences in Istanbul
Iraola addressed the lack of cutting edge that plagued his side against Arsenal while speaking to reporters. He emphasized that the underlying tactical approach showed positive signs despite the scoreless outcome.
“It is difficult when you lose but honestly I am happy with a lot of things from the other day,” Iraola said. “I liked a lot of things but we still need to improve, especially attacking the box. A lot of times we were there with the numbers but not making the proper runs and waiting for second balls.”

The team’s tactical transition under Iraola, who arrived from Bournemouth to replace Arne Slot, continues to face scrutiny. The upcoming European fixture offers a chance to get to 12 points, which would support their aim of finishing in the top eight.
Squad selection for the crucial away fixture took a hit with the absence of midfielder Ryan Gravenberch. The Dutch midfielder remained at home after reporting discomfort with a heel problem during the warm-up on Sunday. Iraola noted that the midfielder has played in all the games or at least all the games lately and requires careful management.
“He has played in all the games or at least all the games lately, so we trust him, he’s doing very well,” Iraola said regarding Gravenberch. “I think we have to encourage him to continue.”
Fenerbahce presents a hurdle on the road to securing qualification for the knockout stages. Mental resilience remains a requirement for a squad attempting to cope with an intimidating stadium atmosphere with half of the group games still to play.
