Celtic suffered a setback in their pursuit of European football, falling to a defeat in the first leg of their Europa League play-off tie on Thursday. The result casts a shadow over the recent arrival of Mexican international Julián Araujo, who joined the Scottish Premiership club on loan from AFC Bournemouth earlier this month.

Araujo, a 24-year-old right-back, was brought in to bolster Celtic’s defensive options and provide competition for places, according to reports following his signing. The move offers the player a crucial opportunity to secure regular playing time ahead of the 2026 World Cup, a tournament for which he is aiming to represent Mexico.

The loan transfer to Celtic marks a significant juncture in Araujo’s career. Having joined Bournemouth in 2024 after a spell with Las Palmas and time in Barcelona’s reserve team, he found first-team opportunities limited in the Premier League. His last appearance for Bournemouth came in August 2025, ending with a sending-off after receiving two yellow cards.

“I’m really happy to join Celtic. What we have is a top club with high standards, and I’m eager to obtain to work with my teammates to help bring success to the supporters. I understand what’s demanded at a club like this, and I feel ready for the challenge ahead,” Araujo stated upon completing his move to Glasgow.

Araujo is only the second Mexican player to represent Celtic, following Efraín Juárez, who played for the club in 2010 and is now head coach of Pumas. His arrival coincides with a period of change at Celtic, with recent adjustments in the club’s leadership.

Celtic’s manager, Wilfried Nancy, will be hoping Araujo’s experience playing for LA Galaxy, where he made 100 appearances, will translate to success in Scotland. Nancy himself has MLS ties, having won MLS Cup in 2023 and MLS Coach of the Year in 2024.

Celtic face a heated rivalry match against Rangers on Saturday, following the disappointing European result. The club has not released any statement regarding the impact of the play-off defeat on Araujo’s immediate role in the squad.
