Mexico City Bolsters Vaccination Efforts as Measles Cases Rise
Mexico City – In response to a national increase in measles cases, the Mexico City government launched the SR/SRP operation (measles, rubella, and parotitis) on august 16th, deploying a multi-pronged vaccination strategy across the city’s 16 mayors. the initiative utilizes fixed vaccination units, mobile kiosks, house-to-house brigades, and vaccination points at high-traffic locations including the Mexico City International Airport, bus terminals, the central supply center, and correctional facilities.
According to the first government report of Mexico City President Clara Brugada, as of August 21st, the campaign had established 96 vaccination posts, conducted 66 house-to-house sweeps, and deployed 32 mobile kiosks, administering over 19,000 doses.
The report details a goal to increase complete vaccination schemes to 90 percent and specifically bolster measles vaccination rates among individuals aged 10 to 49. “They have been applied in the first week of the 31 dose of SRP/SR campaign and it is planned to apply 200 thousand doses until the end of October,” the report states.
Between october 2024 and August 2025, a total of 131,432 doses of the measles vaccine have already been administered.
beyond the measles-focused campaign,the report highlights progress within the Universal Vaccination Program. BCG tuberculosis vaccine coverage increased from 98.7% in 2024 to 99.16% in 2025. Hepatitis B coverage saw a slight rise from 95.9% to 96%.Hexavalent vaccine coverage rose from 91.9% to 92.4%, while Rotavirus coverage increased from 88.9% to 89.3%. The 13V pneumococcal vaccine reached 95.4%,a 0.5% increase. Diphtheria, tetanus, and pertussis (DPT/Tdap) vaccine coverage advanced from 86.3% to 87.9%,and overall measles vaccine coverage increased from 81.7% to 85.6%.
